Rev Massey's Mid Week Epistole - I'll Buy It!

I’LL BUY IT!
The story is told of a farmer who had lived on the same farm all his life. It was a good farm, but with the passing years, the farmer began to tire of it. He longed for a change, for something “better.” Every day he found a new reason for criticizing some feature of the old place. Finally, he decided to sell, and listed the farm with a real estate broker who promptly prepared a sales advertisement.
As one might expect, it emphasized all the farm’s advantages: ideal location, modern equipment, healthy stock, acres of fertile ground, etc. Before placing the ad in the newspaper, the Realtor called the farmer and read the copy to him for his approval. When he had finished, the farmer cried out, “Hold everything! I’ve changed my mind. I am not going to sell. I’ve been looking for a place like that all my life.”
I wonder if that is what would happen with all of us today. Many times we can become disgruntled with ourselves. We are unhappy in our job, our family life is too hard, school is too demanding, and the list could go on forever.
But when we let God come into our lives and read what He sees about our struggles and disappointments, we might also not want to “sell out” to the devil. We might be thrilled with what we have become so far. Maybe we just need to read God’s advertisement for our lives.

Holy God come and remove the blinders that we have placed over our hearts. Change the expectations that we have that come from the world and place the ones that come from the vision of Your Holy Spirit, and then give us a new life to live. In your Holy name we pray. Amen.

Tomorrow is the beginning of Lent - a time of letting Christ have a part of our life that we cannot seem to overcome. It is called sacrificial living. That does not mean giving up something that we fully intend to start again as soon as Easter has passed. It means totally changing our spirits into something that only God could free. Join me next week to find new words to share during the season of Lent.
Grace and Peace
Rev. Jim Massey
